Echelon Front (EF) is a leadership training organization led by retired Navy SEALs Jocko Willink and Leif Babin. Its training is based on leadership skills, principles, and practices that were developed in war and later adapted to address leadership challenges in the business world. Further, EF teaches that leading others is inextricably tied to a demand for self-mastery, a kind of “leadership in oneself.”
This group is not as “grassroots” as many of the others. It is a sizeable corporation. But the event they hosted was informative and relevant to this cause. The idea of leadership is key to our grassroots mission. The idea of leading small teams (like SEAL platoon) is like the small groups in this movement.
The event was an important cultural phenomenon. It blends military honor and patriotism. These are two things that are disparaged in university. A future academic culture must incorperate or interact with the people and knowledge embodied in this community. The event was also interesting because it incorperated physical training and Jiu-Jitsu classes. It is saying that the intellectual content and physical body are united, an idea that must be taken seriously in a future education program.
